About

Zach Hanson is an audio engineer, producer, and musician from Wisconsin. Zach got his start in music at a young age, sharing the musical gifts of his father. He began on guitar and then moved to drums; the bass followed as he cut his teeth playing in numerous bands throughout high school and college. "Whenever it came time to record any of the bands I was in, I was always the one setting up the mics and sitting behind the computer, even when I had no idea what I was doing," Zach reflected on the early days of his career.

After high school, Zach moved to Minneapolis, MN and received a degree in audio engineering while continuing to make music and work in as many studios as he could. This eventually led to carving out a niche for himself of mixing and mastering for other local and regional bands. As the music scene around him grew, so did the requests for his talents in and outside of the studio. In 2010, Zach joined the band of Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey as he ventured out on tour in support of his first solo release as S. Carey. Zach and Sean would go on to collaborate on all of S. Carey’s subsequent releases, including the most recent, 2022’s Break Me Open, of which Zach showcases all of his talents: engineering, mixing, production, and musicianship. When asked why he enjoys working with Zach in the studio, Sean had this to say, "With Zach's calm demeanor, sharp ears, and attention to detail, he's just who you want at the helm."

Beginning in 2015, Zach spent two years playing drums on tour with The Tallest Man On Earth in support of the singer/songwriter's album, Dark Bird Is Home, and would go on to mix his follow up, 2019's I Love You. It’s A Fever Dream.

Zach has also spent time in the studio with the likes of Low, Waxahatxhee, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Whitney, and Bon Iver, which earned him two Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album for his part in the band's 2016 album, 22, A Million, and Best Record for the follow up, 2019's i,i.

Zach currently lives in northwestern Wisconsin with his family where he works out of his home and other local studios when he's not traveling for a session or on tour with S. Carey.
